Gudi Padwa / Ugadi · गुड़ी पड़वा / उगादी
Gudi Padwa (Maharashtra) and Ugadi (Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana) mark the lunar new year on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, the first day of the bright fortnight of Chaitra.
Dates
Dates and times are for New Delhi (Asia/Kolkata). They can differ in other places, especially outside India, and between traditions.
How the date is determined
Chaitra Shukla Pratipada prevailing at sunrise.
In Maharashtra a gudi (a pole topped with a silk cloth, neem leaves and an upturned pot) is raised outside the home. For Ugadi, a pachadi mixing sweet, sour, bitter and other tastes is eaten, and the new year's almanac (panchanga shravanam) is read.
Regional and tradition differences
The same day begins Chaitra Navratri in North India. Other regions celebrate a solar new year in mid-April instead.
