Ganesh Chaturthi · गणेश चतुर्थी
Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Ganesh on the fourth day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada, at midday according to tradition. It begins Ganeshotsav, which in Maharashtra runs for ten days until Anant Chaturdashi.
Dates
Dates and times are for New Delhi (Asia/Kolkata). They can differ in other places, especially outside India, and between traditions.
How the date is determined
Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi prevailing at Madhyahna (midday).
Clay images of Ganesh are installed at home and in public pandals, worshipped with modaks, durva grass and red flowers, and immersed in water after one and a half, five, seven or ten days.
Regional and tradition differences
Tradition advises not to look at the moon on this night. Public Ganeshotsav was popularised by Lokmanya Tilak in the 1890s.
