Chaitra Navratri · चैत्र नवरात्रि
Chaitra Navratri is the nine-night festival of the Goddess at the start of the Hindu lunar year, beginning on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada and ending with Ram Navami on the ninth day.
Dates
Dates and times are for New Delhi (Asia/Kolkata). They can differ in other places, especially outside India, and between traditions.
How the date is determined
Begins on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada prevailing at sunrise.
On the first day a pot (kalash) is installed and barley sown (ghatasthapana). The nine forms of Durga are worshipped one each day; many fast, read the Durga Saptashati and perform kanya puja on Ashtami or Navami.
Regional and tradition differences
The same day begins the new year as Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra and Ugadi in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Navratri can last eight or ten days when a tithi is skipped or repeated.
