Bhai Dooj, on the second day of the bright fortnight of Kartika, closes the Diwali festival. It celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters, recalling Yama visiting his sister Yamuna.

Sisters apply a tilak to their brothers' foreheads, perform aarti and feed them; brothers give gifts. Bathing in the Yamuna on this day is considered meritorious.

It is called Bhau Beej in Maharashtra and Bhai Phonta in Bengal.
