Saraswati Vandana (Ya Kundendu) ·

The Sanskrit verse to Saraswati, white as jasmine and the moon, asking her to remove all dullness of mind.

sa mam patu saraswati bhagavati nihshesha jadyapaha ||

    yā kundendutuṣārahāradhavalā yā śubhravastrāvṛtā । yā vīṇāvaradaṇḍamaṇḍitakarā yā śvetapadmāsanā । yā brahmācyuta-śaṃkara-prabhṛtibhirdevaiḥ sadā pūjitā । sā māṃ pātu sarasvatī bhagavatī niḥśeṣajāḍyāpahā ॥

    She who is white as the jasmine, the moon, snow and a pearl necklace, who is dressed in pure white; whose hands are adorned with the excellent veena, who is seated on a white lotus; who is always worshipped by Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and the other gods: may that goddess Saraswati, who removes every trace of dullness, protect me.

vande tam parameshwarim bhagavatim buddhi pradam sharadam ||

    śuklāṃ brahmavicāra sāra paramāmādyāṃ jagadvyāpinīṃ । vīṇā-pustaka-dhāriṇīmabhayadāṃ jāḍyāndhakārāpahām । haste sphaṭikamālikāṃ vidadhatīṃ padmāsane saṃsthitām । vande tāṃ parameśvarīṃ bhagavatīṃ buddhipradāṃ śāradām ॥

    I bow to Sharada, the supreme goddess, giver of understanding: fair and white, the highest essence of the contemplation of Brahman, primordial, pervading the world, holding the vina and the book, granting fearlessness, dispelling the darkness of dullness, holding a crystal rosary in her hand and seated on a lotus.

About this text

Ya Kundendu Tushara Haradhavala is a Sanskrit verse to Saraswati, recited in schools and at the start of study and performances across India. It is often followed by a second verse beginning शुक्लां ब्रह्मविचारसारपरमाम्; too few of the sources compared include it for it to be given here yet.

How it is recited
