About this text

Om Sahana Vavatu is a shanti (peace) mantra from the Krishna Yajurveda tradition, recited at the opening of the Taittiriya and Katha Upanishads. Teacher and student pray together to be protected and nourished together, to work together with energy, that their study be brilliant, and that they never bear ill will to each other. It ends with "Om shanti" three times. It is addressed to no particular deity. In Vedic recitation it carries accent marks, which are not shown on this page.

How it is recited

It is recited at the start of study, in schools and gurukuls, and before teaching or reading scripture. Practices vary.
