Narayan Kavach: Meaning

The Narayan Kavach ("armour of Narayana") is the eighth chapter of the sixth book of the Bhagavata Purana. When the gods had lost their glory, they chose Vishvarupa, son of Tvashta, as their priest, and he taught Indra this protective prayer; armed with it, Indra defeated the asuras. The chapter has three parts: the preparation and the placing of the mantra's syllables on the body (nyasa, verses 4–11); the kavacha proper (verses 12–34), which asks each of Vishnu's forms, names and weapons to guard the devotee in every place, at every hour and against every danger; and the closing verses on its power (35–42). The notes explain the structure and the less familiar names.

O discus, sent forth by the Lord, your rim sharp as the fire at the end of the age, whirl all around and burn, burn the enemy armies at once, as fire, the friend of the wind, burns dry grass.

Verses 23–26 address Vishnu's weapons directly: the discus burns the enemy like wind-driven fire, the mace crushes harmful spirits, the conch Panchajanya terrifies, the sword cuts, the shield blinds the wicked.

O mace, dear to the unconquered Lord, sending out sparks at your touch like a thunderbolt, crush, crush and grind to dust the Kushmandas, Vainayakas, yakshas, rakshasas, bhutas and grahas; grind my enemies to dust.

O best of conches, filled with Krishna's breath, sounding terribly, shaking the hearts of enemies, drive away the yatudhanas, pramathas, pretas, matrikas, pishachas, brahma-rakshasas and those with the evil eye.

O best of swords, of sharp edge, sent by the Lord, cut, cut down the enemy armies; O shield marked with a hundred moons, cover the eyes of hostile sinners and take away the sight of the wicked.

    सदसच्चsadasaccabeing and non-being

As the Lord alone truly is all that is, both seen and unseen, by this truth may all our troubles be destroyed.

The philosophical core: since the Lord alone truly is all that exists and does not, by the power of this truth may all troubles perish.

    एकत्व का अनुभव करने वालों के लिए वे स्वयं सब भेदों से रहित होकर भी अपनी माया से आभूषण, आयुध और चिह्न नाम की शक्तियाँ धारण करते हैं;

    उसी सत्य से सर्वज्ञ, सर्वव्यापक भगवान हरि अपने सब रूपों से सदा और सब जगह हमारी रक्षा करें।

by that same truth, may the all-knowing Lord Hari, present everywhere, protect us always and everywhere with all his forms.

In the corners and the four directions, above, below and all around, within and without, may Lord Narasimha protect us: he who drives away the world's fear with his roar, and whose splendour swallows every other light.

The kavacha closes with Narasimha guarding every direction, above, below, within and without, his roar dispelling the fear of the worlds.

    मरुधन्वनिmarudhanvaniin the desert

Long ago a brahmin of the Kaushika line who held this knowledge gave up his body by yogic concentration in the desert.

Verses 38–40 tell an example of the armour's power: a brahmin of the Kaushika line died holding this knowledge, and the gandharva Chitraratha, flying over his bones, fell from the sky until he cast them into the Sarasvati.

ya idaṃ śṛṇuyātkāle yo dhārayati cādṛtaḥ । taṃ namasyanti bhūtāni mucyate sarvato bhayāt ॥

(Shri Shuka said:) Whoever hears this at the right time, or wears it with reverence, is honoured by all beings and freed from fear on every side.

    शतक्रतुःśatakratuḥIndra, of a hundred sacrifices

Having received this knowledge from Vishvarupa, Indra of the hundred sacrifices conquered the asuras in battle and enjoyed the glory of the three worlds.

The chapter ends where it began: having received this knowledge from Vishvarupa, Indra defeated the asuras and enjoyed the glory of the three worlds.
