Santoshi Mata · संतोषी माता
Santoshi Mata is the goddess of contentment, worshipped especially by women in North India with a Friday vrat.
Santoshi Mata, "the Mother of Satisfaction", is a Hindu goddess worshipped particularly by women in North India and Nepal. Her worship spread through word of mouth, vrat booklets and poster art, and became widely popular after the 1975 film Jai Santoshi Maa, which presented her as the daughter of Ganesha. Her chalisa likewise calls her the daughter of Ganesha and of Riddhi and Siddhi.
Her best-known observance is the Santoshi Mata vrat, kept on Fridays, traditionally for sixteen consecutive Fridays, with an offering of jaggery and chickpeas and the reading of her katha. Practice varies by region and family.
