जनक जननि पद कमल रज निज मस्तक पर धारि । बन्दौं मातु सरस्वती बुद्धि बल दे दातारि ॥

janak janani pad kamal raj nij mastak par dhari | bandaun matu sarasvati buddhi bal de datari ||

पिता और माता के चरण-कमलों की धूल अपने मस्तक पर धारण करके, मैं बुद्धि और बल देने वाली माता सरस्वती की वंदना करता हूँ।

Placing the dust of my father's and mother's lotus feet on my head, I bow to Mother Saraswati, giver of intellect and strength.

पूर्ण जगत में व्याप्त तव महिमा अमित अनंतु । रामसागर के पाप को मातु तुही अब हन्तु ॥

purn jagat men vyapt tav mahima amit anantu | ramasagar ke pap ko matu tuhi ab hantu ||

आपकी अपार और अनंत महिमा पूरे जगत में व्याप्त है; हे माता, अब आप ही रामसागर के पापों का नाश कीजिए।

Your boundless, endless glory pervades the whole world; Mother, now destroy the sins of Ramsagar.

जय श्री सकल बुद्धि बलरासी । जय सर्वज्ञ अमर अविनासी ॥

jay shri sakal buddhi balarasi | jay sarvagy amar avinasi ||

समस्त बुद्धि और बल की राशि, श्री (देवी) की जय हो; सर्वज्ञ, अमर और अविनाशी की जय हो।

Victory to the glorious one, treasury of all intellect and strength; victory to the all-knowing, immortal, imperishable one.

जय जय जय वीणाकर धारी । करती सदा सुहंस सवारी ॥

jay jay jay vinakar dhari | karati sada suhans savari ||

वीणा धारण करने वाली की जय हो, जय हो, जय हो, जो सदा सुंदर हंस की सवारी करती हैं।

Victory, victory, victory to the bearer of the veena, who always rides the fine swan.

रूप चतुर्भुजधारी माता । सकल विश्व अन्दर विख्याता ॥

rup chaturbhujadhari mata | sakal vishv andar vikhyata ||

हे चार भुजाओं वाले रूप की माता, आप समस्त विश्व में विख्यात हैं।

Mother of four-armed form, renowned throughout the universe.

जग में पाप बुद्धि जब होती । तब ही धर्म की फीकी ज्योति ॥

jag men pap buddhi jab hoti | tab hi dharm ki phiki jyoti ||

जब संसार में पाप-बुद्धि जागती है, तब धर्म की ज्योति फीकी पड़ जाती है।

When sinful thinking arises in the world, the light of dharma grows dim.

तबहि मातु ले निज अवतारा । पाप हीन करती महि तारा ॥

tabahi matu le nij avatara | pap hin karati mahi tara ||

तब माता अपना अवतार लेती हैं, और पृथ्वी को पाप से रहित करके उसका उद्धार करती हैं।

Then, Mother, you take your incarnation, rid the earth of sin and save it.

बाल्मीकि जी थे हत्यारा । तव प्रसाद जानै संसारा ॥

balmiki ji the hatyara | tav prasad janai sansara ||

वाल्मीकि जी हत्यारे थे; यह आपकी कृपा थी, जिसे संसार जानता है,

Valmiki was a killer; it was by your grace, as the world knows,

रामायण जो रचे बनाई । आदि कवी की पदवी पाई ॥

ramayan jo rache banai | adi kavi ki padavi pai ||

कि उन्होंने रामायण रची और आदिकवि की पदवी पाई।

that he composed the Ramayana and gained the title of the first poet.

कालिदास जो भये विख्याता । तेरी कृपा दृष्टि से माता ॥

kalidas jo bhaye vikhyata | teri kripa drishti se mata ||

कालिदास जो विख्यात हुए, वह हे माता, आपकी कृपा-दृष्टि से हुए।

Kalidasa became renowned through your gracious glance, Mother.

तुलसी सूर आदि विद्धाना । भये और जो ज्ञानी नाना ॥

tulasi sur adi viddhana | bhaye aur jo gyani nana ||

तुलसी, सूर आदि विद्वान, और जो अन्य अनेक ज्ञानी हुए,

Tulsidas, Surdas and other learned poets, and the many other wise people there have been,

तिन्हहिं न और रहेउ अवलम्बा । केवल कृपा आपकी अम्बा ॥

tinhahin n aur raheu avalamba | keval kripa apaki amba ||

उनका कोई और सहारा नहीं था, हे अंबा, केवल आपकी कृपा थी।

had no other support than your grace alone, Amba.

करहु कृपा सोइ मातु भवानी । दुखित दीन निज दासहि जानी ॥

karahu kripa soi matu bhavani | dukhit din nij dasahi jani ||

हे माता भवानी, मुझे अपना दुखी और दीन दास जानकर वही कृपा कीजिए।

Mother Bhavani, show me that same grace, knowing me to be your suffering, humble servant.

पुत्र करै अपराध बहूता । तेहि न धरइ चित सुन्दर माता ॥

putr karai aparadh bahuta | tehi n dhari chit sundar mata ||

पुत्र बहुत से अपराध करता है, पर सुंदर (स्नेही) माता उन्हें मन में नहीं रखती।

A son commits many faults, but a good mother does not hold them in her mind.

राखु लाज जननी अब मेरी । विनय करूं बहु भाँति घनेरी ॥

rakhu laj janani ab meri | vinay karun bahu bhanti ghaneri ||

हे जननी, अब मेरी लाज रखिए; मैं अनेक प्रकार से विनती करता हूँ।

Mother, protect my honour now; I plead with you in many ways.

मैं अनाथ तेरी अवलंबा । कृपा करउ जय जय जगदंबा ॥

main anath teri avalanba | kripa karu jay jay jagadanba ||

मैं अनाथ हूँ, आप ही मेरा सहारा हैं; कृपा कीजिए, जगदंबा की जय हो, जय हो।

I have no protector; you are my support. Show grace; victory, victory to Jagadamba.

मधुकैटभ जो अति बलवाना । बाहुयुद्ध विष्णू ते ठाना ॥

madhukaitabh jo ati balavana | bahuyuddh vishnu te thana ||

मधु और कैटभ, जो अत्यंत बलवान थे, उन्होंने विष्णु से बाहुयुद्ध ठाना।

Madhu and Kaitabha, who were very strong, took up a wrestling fight with Vishnu.

समर हजार पांच में घोरा । फिर भी मुख उनसे नहिं मोरा ॥

samar hajar panch men ghora | phir bhi mukh unase nahin mora ||

पाँच हजार (वर्षों) के घोर युद्ध में भी उन्होंने उनसे मुँह नहीं मोड़ा।

In a fierce battle of five thousand (years), still they did not turn away from him.

मातु सहाय भई तेहि काला । बुद्धि विपरीत करी खलहाला ॥

matu sahay bhi tehi kala | buddhi viparit kari khalahala ||

तब माता सहायक हुईं, और उन दुष्टों की बुद्धि उलटी कर दी।

Then the Mother came to help, and turned the minds of the wicked ones awry.

तेहि ते मृत्यु भई खल केरी । पुरवहु मातु मनोरथ मेरी ॥

tehi te mrityu bhi khal keri | puravahu matu manorath meri ||

उसी से उन दुष्टों की मृत्यु हुई; हे माता, मेरे मनोरथ पूरे कीजिए।

That brought about the death of the wicked; Mother, fulfil my wishes.

चंड मुण्ड जो थे विख्याता । छण महुं संहारेउ तेहि माता ॥

chand mund jo the vikhyata | chhhan mahun sanhareu tehi mata ||

चंड और मुंड, जो विख्यात थे, हे माता, उन्हें आपने क्षण भर में मार डाला।

Chanda and Munda, who were renowned, you slew in a moment, Mother.

रक्तबीज से समरथ पापी । सुर-मुनि हृदय धरा सब कांपी ॥

raktabij se samarath papi | sura-muni hriday dhara sab kanpi ||

रक्तबीज जैसा शक्तिशाली पापी, जिससे देवताओं और मुनियों के हृदय और सारी पृथ्वी काँप उठी,

Raktabija, a mighty sinner, before whom the hearts of gods and sages and the whole earth trembled,

काटेउ सिर जिम कदली खम्बा । बार बार बिनवउं जगदंबा ॥

kateu sir jim kadali khamba | bar bar binavun jagadanba ||

उसका सिर आपने केले के तने की तरह काट दिया; हे जगदंबा, मैं बार-बार आपकी विनती करता हूँ।

you cut off his head like a banana stem; again and again I pray to you, Jagadamba.

जगप्रसिद्ध जो शुंभनिशुंभा । छिन में बधे ताहि तू अम्बा ॥

jagaprasiddh jo shunbhanishunbha | chhhin men badhe tahi tu amba ||

जगत-प्रसिद्ध शुंभ और निशुंभ को, हे अंबा, आपने क्षण भर में मार डाला।

Shumbha and Nishumbha, famous across the world, you slew in a moment, Amba.

भरत-मातु बुधि फेरेउ जाई । रामचन्द्र बनवास कराई ॥

bharata-matu budhi phereu jai | ramachandr banavas karai ||

आपने जाकर भरत की माता (कैकेयी) की बुद्धि फेरी, और रामचंद्र को वनवास कराया।

You went and turned the mind of Bharat's mother (Kaikeyi), and had Ramchandra sent into exile.

एहि विधि रावन वध तुम कीन्हा । सुर नर मुनि सब कहुं सुख दीन्हा ॥

ehi vidhi ravan vadh tum kinha | sur nar muni sab kahun sukh dinha ||

इस प्रकार आपने रावण का वध कराया और देवताओं, मनुष्यों और मुनियों सबको सुख दिया।

In this way you brought about Ravana's death and gave happiness to gods, men and sages.

को समरथ तव यश गुन गाना । निगम अनादि अनंत बखाना ॥

ko samarath tav yash gun gana | nigam anadi anant bakhana ||

आपके यश और गुणों को गाने में कौन समर्थ है? वेदों ने उन्हें अनादि और अनंत बताया है।

Who is able to sing your glory and virtues? The Vedas call them without beginning and without end.

विष्णु रूद्र अज सकहिं न मारी । जिनकी हो तुम रक्षाकारी ॥

vishnu rudr aj sakahin n mari | jinaki ho tum rakshakari ||

जिनकी आप रक्षा करती हैं, उन्हें विष्णु, रुद्र और ब्रह्मा भी नहीं मार सकते।

Vishnu, Rudra and Brahma cannot kill one whom you protect.

रक्त दन्तिका और शताक्षी । नाम अपार है दानव भक्षी ॥

rakt dantika aur shatakshi | nam apar hai danav bhakshi ||

रक्तदंतिका और शताक्षी: हे दानवों का भक्षण करने वाली, आपके नाम अपार हैं।

Raktadantika and Shatakshi: your names are countless, devourer of demons.

दुर्गम काज धरा पर कीन्हा । दुर्गा नाम सकल जग लीन्हा ॥

durgam kaj dhara par kinha | durga nam sakal jag linha ||

आपने पृथ्वी पर दुर्गम कार्य किया, इसलिए सारे जगत ने आपका नाम दुर्गा रखा।

You did a difficult deed on the earth, and so the whole world took up the name Durga.

दुर्ग आदि हरनी तू माता । कृपा करहु जब जब सुखदाता ॥

durg adi harani tu mata | kripa karahu jab jab sukhadata ||

हे माता, हे सुखदाता, जब-जब आप कृपा करती हैं, आप दुर्गम कष्ट आदि हर लेती हैं।

Mother, you remove hardships and the like whenever you show grace, giver of happiness.

नृप कोपित जो मारन चाहै । कानन में घेरे मृग नाहै ॥

nrip kopit jo maran chahai | kanan men ghere mrig nahai ||

यदि क्रोधित राजा किसी को मारना चाहे, या जंगल में हिंसक पशु उसे घेर लें,

If an angry king seeks to kill someone, or he is surrounded by wild beasts in the forest,

सागर मध्य पोत के भंगे । अति तूफान नहिं कोऊ संगे ॥

sagar madhy pot ke bhange | ati tuphan nahin kou sange ||

या समुद्र के बीच भयंकर तूफान में जहाज टूट जाए और कोई साथ न हो,

or his ship breaks apart in mid-ocean in a great storm, with no one beside him,

भूत प्रेत बाधा या दुःख में । हो दरिद्र अथवा संकट में ॥

bhut pret badha ya duhkh men | ho daridr athava sankat men ||

भूत-प्रेत की बाधा या दुख में, दरिद्रता या संकट में,

in trouble from ghosts and spirits or in sorrow, in poverty or in danger,

करहु कृपा भवमुक्ति भवानी । मो कहं दास सदा निज जानी ॥

karahu kripa bhavamukti bhavani | mo kahan das sada nij jani ||

हे भव-बंधन से मुक्त करने वाली भवानी, मुझे सदा अपना दास जानकर कृपा कीजिए।

Bhavani, who frees from worldly bondage, show grace, knowing me always as your own servant.

माता सूरज कान्ति तव अंधकार मम रूप । डूबन ते रक्षा करहु परूं न मैं भव-कूप ॥

mata suraj kanti tav andhakar mam rup | duban te raksha karahu parun n main bhava-kup ||

हे माता, आपकी कांति सूर्य जैसी है और मेरा रूप अंधकार है; डूबने से मेरी रक्षा कीजिए, मैं संसार-रूपी कुएँ में न गिरूँ।

Mother, your radiance is like the sun, and my form is darkness; save me from drowning, let me not fall into the well of worldly existence.

बल बुद्धि विद्या देहुं मोहि सुनहु सरस्वति मातु । अधम रामसागरहिं तुम आश्रय देउ पुनातु ॥

bal buddhi vidya dehun mohi sunahu sarasvati matu | adham ramasagarahin tum ashray deu punatu ||

मुझे बल, बुद्धि और विद्या दीजिए; हे माता सरस्वती, सुनिए। अधम रामसागर को आश्रय देकर पवित्र कीजिए।

Give me strength, intellect and learning; hear me, Mother Saraswati. Give shelter to the lowly Ramsagar and purify him.
