Durga Chalisa: Meaning

The Durga Chalisa is a Hindi devotional hymn in forty chaupais; its closing line names the poet as Devidas. It praises the Goddess as formless light and as the power behind creation, preservation and dissolution, names her forms (Annapurna, Saraswati, Lakshmi, the Mahavidyas) and shrines (Hinglaj, Nagarkot, Jwalamukhi), recalls her victories over demons, and ends with a personal prayer and the benefits of recitation. The notes explain each chaupai simply.
