yam ke tras na pave jo nitya dhyan kare ||

Whoever rises at dawn and bathes every day, whoever meditates on you daily, does not suffer the torment of Yama.
tumhara bara mahatam charon ved kahi ||
kalikāla meṃ mahimā tumhārī aṭala rahī । tumhārā baṙā mahātama cāroṃ veda kahī ॥
In the Kali age your glory has stood firm; the four Vedas have spoken of your great greatness.
nitya nirmal jal pikar kans ko mar diyo ||
āna tumhāre mātā prabhu avatāra liyo । nitya nirmala jala pīkara kaṃsa ko māra diyo ॥
On your banks, Mother, the Lord took birth; drinking your ever-pure water, he killed Kamsa.
man bechain bhaya hai tum bin vaitarani ||
namo māta bhaya haraṇī śubha mangala karaṇī । mana becaina bhayā hai tuma bina vaitaraṇī ॥
Salutations, Mother, remover of fear, bringer of good fortune; my mind is restless, for without you how can I cross the Vaitarani?
About this text
The Yamuna, sister of Yama, the god of death, is worshipped as a mother whose waters free those who bathe in them from Yama's torment. This aarti praises her cool, holy water and its deep current, says whoever takes refuge in her is set free and whoever bathes and meditates at dawn escapes Yama's fear, and that her glory has stood firm in the Kali age, praised by the four Vedas. It recalls that the Lord, Krishna, was born by her banks and killed Kamsa, and ends by calling her the remover of fear and asking how the restless mind could cross the river of death without her. In two lines the two editions differ; the reading of the more-visited site is shown and both readings are listed. The opening couplet is sung as a refrain.
How it is recited
It is sung on the ghats of Mathura and Vrindavan, after bathing in the Yamuna, and on Yama Dwitiya (Bhai Dooj), when brothers and sisters bathe in the river. Customs vary.
